About

Daniel Wijedasa is a 20-year-old baritone saxophonist, woodwind doubler, and composer from Los Angeles in his second year of the jazz program at the Thornton School of Music. Involved in music at an early age, Daniel began playing the saxophone in the 7th grade, studying with Los Angeles saxophonist and woodwind doubler Phil Feather, upon joining his middle school band and jazz band.

Daniel's commitment to his craft secured him a spot in one of the Southern California School Band & Orchestra Association honors groups (SCSBOA), which he held from the 8th grade and throughout high school. Through his experience, Daniel became the recipient of a recognition scholarship to attend the Stanford Jazz Workshop. In addition to participating in SCSBOA, Daniel was also a member of the Colburn Jazz Workshop Big Band and the LAUSD All-City Jazz Band. He was also a semifinalist for The Music Center's Spotlight program competition in 2023.

Daniel’s range of musical prowess extends beyond his primary instrument. He is a highly adaptable musician, playing soprano, tenor, and alto saxophone, as well as woodwinds such as bass clarinet, clarinet, and flute, all under the instruction of prominent jazz figures such as Bob Mintzer, Jason Goldman, and Alex Hahn. Daniel is also sharpening his skills on piano while studying with Josh Nelson.

While attending USC, Daniel has become a vital member of esteemed ensembles such as the Thornton Jazz Orchestra (TJO) and the Afro-Latin American Jazz Ensemble (ALAJE). Daniel is a skilled composer and arranger for a wide array of ensembles, spanning from original jazz compositions for small piece groups to large ensembles. Beyond USC, Daniel has completed a West Coast summer tour with the indie artist “dyego” and is set for more tour dates in the following year.

Daniel is currently in the process of curating his own discography of music. With original compositions built upon his extensive musical background, he aims to create a bridge between jazz and more mainstream genres. Daniel’s original pieces are inspiring, thoughtful music that everyone can enjoy.
